Arizona: Using Fire to Restore Watersheds

Bruce Anderson, a Gila National Forest wildlife biologist, provided these before-and-after photos from one of the areas that was treated with fire. As you can see from the photos above, the area is returning to more of a “woodland” system, as opposed to a heavily forested (with piñon and juniper) system. The first photo is from August, while the second photo was taken more than a year ago in April 2006.

Help the Seas to Help Us

Thankfully, the world has moved beyond denial of climate change. More and more people and governments are focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. But more can and should be done. The creation of marine protected areas can be one effective buffer to climate change. Setting aside marine areas allows species and their associated ecosystems to continue to evolve. Locales for key life-cycle stages, from spawning to nurseries to feeding areas, are protected from disturbance. Protected areas also provide space for the growth of sea life that, upon maturity, can populate adjacent, open areas. Commercial and sports fishermen benefit.

Climate Change Mitigation – Partnering with Mother Nature

As governments budget hundreds of millions of dollars to encourage "green" energy development, and environmental organizations increasingly point to the need for "green" technology to address the challenges of climate change, the origin of "green" in our current vernacular of environment, has arguably been forgotten.
