Help the Seas to Help Us
Thankfully, the world has moved beyond denial of climate change. More and more people and governments are focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions. But more can and should be done. The creation of marine protected areas can be one effective buffer to climate change. Setting aside marine areas allows species and their associated ecosystems to continue to evolve. Locales for key life-cycle stages, from spawning to nurseries to feeding areas, are protected from disturbance. Protected areas also provide space for the growth of sea life that, upon maturity, can populate adjacent, open areas. Commercial and sports fishermen benefit.
